In New Zealand, approximately 36,000 traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are reported each year, with 95% of these being concussions or mild TBI.
What is a concussion?A concussion is a type of mild TBI caused by a bump, jolt, or blow to the head that causes the brain to move rapidly back and forth. This rapid movement can cause the brain to bounce or twist inside the skull, resulting in chemical changes and stretched or damaged brain cells. These changes often don’t show up on x-rays or scans.
Concussion Facts:* You don’t need a direct blow to the head. Any impact on the body that causes the brain to shake violently can cause a concussion or mild TBI.* You don’t need to be knocked out to have a concussion.* If you’ve had one concussion, you may be at risk for another, and recovery can take longer after subsequent injuries.
Rehabilitation Support for Concussion & Mild TBI:Early intervention, education, and recovery advice are key to facilitating recovery. While most people recover within a few weeks to a month, emerging research shows that many individuals take longer and need specialized, interdisciplinary care.
